The Love Haters

Thank you to the powers that be for brining me an ARC review for one of my favorite authors-Katherine Center. Seriously...how many books does one have to read to come across an author that nearly fulfills all of your reader needs. It was just one for me. After I read The Rom-Commers I was a fangirl for Katherine. I follow her on social and was thrilled to find out she has a new RomCom book coming out May 2025. When I was approved by NetGalley I couldn't believe it! So here we go

I absolutely loved The Love Haters! It's definitely a 5-star read for me. This book has everything I look for: great writing, perfect pace, well-developed characters, a compelling plot, romance, humor, insightful information, and fantastic dialogue. If you're a fan of Katherine Center, this is must-read. and if you're in the mood for a captivating, non-explicit fiction book, you should definitely give this a try.

The story is narrated in the first-person by Katie Vaughn, who works for a video production company undergoing a restructuring led by a new female executive with a power trip. In a last-ditch effort, Katie's boss, Cole, sends her to Key West to create a promotional video for Coast Guard recruitment. In addition to filming the video promo, Cole hopes that Katie can help save their jobs by creating a special YouTube promo featuring Coast Guard officer and rescue swimmer Hutch for her 'Day in the Life' side project. However, there are two problems: firstly, Katie cannot swim (and she omits this truth to secure the job), and secondly Hutch and Cole are brothers with Hutch believing that Cole is coming to Key West to film the project. There is currently tension between the brothers. Tom 'Hutch' Hutchinson is a USCG rescue swimmer known as a 'love-hater' described as:  "He's all rules and no heart! He's all action and no reaction He's all body and no soul."

The story develops with Katie arriving on this island, forming a bond with Hutch's charming aunt Rue, and even recieving swim lessons from Hutch. This book is full of funny moments, and I absolutely adore stories featuring animals. A strong male character who deeply love his pet--so heartwarming! There is a magnificent dog in this book, and let me tell you, he steals the show. Lately, I've been drawn to stories about people reconnecting with and cherishing their pets. Moreover, I enjoy books that offer learning opportunities. I recently read another book about a coast guard rescue swimmer, but I didn't gain any new knowledge. However, in this book, I was able to learn about coast guards and even some basic swimming facts. I find this incredibly satisfying! The story held numerous surprises that caught me off guard. I anticipated the plot to unfold in a certain way, but then it took unexpected turns. It blended seamlessly with the narrative. The conflicts were also resolved in a satisfying manner. Initially, I felt frustrated by eh main character's lack of confidence. She frequently belittled herself and had insecurities that puzzled me. However, as I continued reading, I realized that this was an essential part of the story and her internal struggle. The book addressed this, so I can't really complain about it. There are some wonderful emotional conversations and moments of self-discovery.

"No one's born fearless. You have to earn it. Every time you have to be brave, you get to be a little braver next time. That's what life is for."

Overall, 5 stars!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Chef's kiss because I love this. My only note is I would like to know a little more about the couple in the epilogue and what happens...but I am nosey and want to know as much about what happens after as possible. The main point is that there IS an epilogue which for me is a MUST. Thank you again for this ARC--I can't wait to make everyone I know read this book!
